If want you want to do is take a nation and paint the world in the colour of your flag - using a fair bit of excellent warfare, plus some political/diplomatic maneuverings, you want EU4 (also: Colonization and Trade). The ruler of your nation is more or less irrelevant except that during his/her lifetime you might get a slight bonus to some resources. It's just that those people happen to own land and run countries.ĮU4 is much closer to something like Civilization in that you are managing a nation. It's a game about people, relationships, and dynasties. This was likely due in large part to the popularity of Game of Thones (CK2 is the best game of thrones game ever, even though it's based on reality instead of fiction.unless you install the game of thrones mod of course.) It's a bit like The Sims on crack.

Instead, they are referred to as Grand Strategy games because they involve using a wide swath of nation-based resources (economic, politic, diplomatic, and military) to achieve goals.ĬK2 is notable because it was very successful at introducing grand strategy gaming to people who weren't typically strategy gamers. CK2 and EU4 are not generally referred to as 4X games because they don't have much in the way of exploration or expansion (since the world is mostly already inhabited by people) and there's not much technology to exploit either (most nations in your neighborhood will generally have the same level of tech).
